1. A New Perspective on Identity

Back in the States, being a Black man is a significant part of my identity. It shapes interactions, perceptions, and experiences. However, in Japan, I’ve found that the color of my skin doesn’t define who I am as prominently. Here, I’m seen as a man first, and the nuances of my racial identity take a backseat. This shift has been intriguing and liberating, providing a new lens through which to view myself and the world.

2. Navigating Racism and Prejudices

Don't get me wrong; Japan, like any other country, has its own forms of racism and prejudices. Interestingly, these biases often prioritize nationality and ethnicity over skin color. For example, the top three groups that face the most scrutiny here are Koreans, Vietnamese, and Chinese. To an untrained eye, these groups might look similar, but the societal biases run deep. Before anyone gets to me, there are other minorities like Indians, Thai, Filipinos, and other Southeast Asians who also navigate their own unique challenges.

3. Finding Safety and Peace of Mind

Despite these underlying prejudices, my personal experience in Japan has been overwhelmingly positive. I haven’t faced significant racism directed at me. Instead, I’ve found safety and peace of mind. Japan is a fascinating place with a myriad of activities and experiences waiting to be explored. From the bustling streets of Shibuya to the serene temples of Kyoto, every day offers something new and exciting.
